Go-To Vegan Food In Northern California
Since living in Northern California for the past few years, I am always keeping my eyes and ears open for restaurants with delicious vegan food. I’m not talking about the places where you order a salad, (hold the cheese, meat and creamy dressing) and are left with a dry plain lettuce that consists of tomatoes and cucumbers. No, that’s just criminal. I am talking about places that are either fully plant based, or have a special vegan section on their menu. Here’s some of the go-to vegan food places in Northern California.
Vegan food can be difficult to come across, depending on where you live, I am out in the valley and there is literally no specialty vegan restaurants around here. I have traveled all over Northern California and tried some amazing variety of incredible plant based meals and desserts! These are the places that stuck out the most to me, starting with the ones I found most impressive.
The Butcher’s Son, Berkeley CA: A small ‘hole in the wall’ all vegan eatery with the most incredible comfort food I have ever had, it’s not number one on my list for no reason. I highly recommend the ‘adult grilled cheese with bacon’!

Cinnaholic, Berkeley CA: Can you tell I am a fan of Berkeley food? This completely vegan build-your-own cinnamon bun spot has an endless list of delicious icings and toppings that you can put on top of your hot, fresh cinnamon bun. To make things even better, they recently began serving vegan cookie dough by the bowl (omg) so this is my favourite place for dessert hands down! I recommend a cinnamon bun with chai icing and pie crumble topping, and of course a bowl of chocolate chip cookie dough!
Bauer’s 66 ½, Modesto CA: Featured on the hit T.V show ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’, I had to check out this place! While they are in no way fully vegan, they do have a great vegan dinner section, and also many vegan appetizer options. The must try items are the lemon garlic brussel sprouts, the french fries (trust me) and the teriyaki tofu sandwich!
Veggie Grill, Walnut Creek CA: This was the first ever all vegan food establishment that I ever went to! I’ve been in love ever since. My go-to meal was the ‘TLT’ (as opposed to the conventional BLT), their sweet potato fries and carrot cake were also staples in my lunch order. Although, I have not been back since they began serving the ‘Wunderbrat’ (by Beyond Meat) and am keen to try that!

The Loving Hut, Elk Grove CA: I have always loved asian inspired dishes and it was so hard to find a vegan version to replace the conventional animal based ones. This completely vegan restaurant hits the spot!! I love the ‘sweet n’ sour sensation’ and the ‘cashew tofu’. Bonus; they also serve a variety of vegan desserts!
Pressed Juicery, Danville CA: The best place if you’re looking for a feel good fro-yo style dessert! I suggest their ‘Chocolate Freeze’, which is made with water, almonds, dates, cacao and sea salt. That’s it! So simple, but oh so good. Then, top it with their cacao drizzle and cacao nibs. Yum.

Let Them Eat Cake, Davis CA: This little cupcake and cake shop hidden in a little house-like building beside UC Davis is not a completely vegan establishment. However, they always have at least one (but usually 3 or 4) outstanding vegan cupcakes! The s’mores is delicious, but the vanilla bean is also simple and so satisfying.
While it can be expensive to eat out at restaurants, I love supporting businesses that are making a solid effort at offering delicious plant based meals! The world needs more places like this. What are some of your favourite go-to vegan food establishments to eat where you live?
