Joaquin Phoenix Calls For Action On Climate Change In Golden Globes Speech
Vegan actor Joaquin Phoenix won a Golden Globe this week for his performance in Joker — and used the opportunity to ask fellow attendees to take action on climate change.
“Contrary to popular belief, I don’t want to rock the boat. But the boat is…rocked” said Phoenix in his acceptance speech.
“It’s great to vote, but sometimes we have to take that responsibility on ourselves and make changes and sacrifices in our own lives, and I hope that we can do that. We don’t have to take private jets to Palm Springs. I’ll try to do better and I hope you will too.”
The event marked the 77th annual Golden Globes event, which became the first major awards ceremony to offer an exclusively vegan menu.
“It was a very bold move, making tonight plant-based,” continued Phoenix in his speech, “and it really sends a powerful message.”
Phoenix — who plays Arther Fleck in Joker — won the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama).

Joaquin Phoenix Vegan Advocacy
In 2019, Phoenix won PETA’s Person of the Year award in recognition of his decades of animal rights advocacy.
The actor — who has followed a vegan diet since he was three years old — has worked with PETA for several years.
“Joaquin Phoenix never misses an opportunity to turn the spotlight away from himself and onto animals’ plight” praised PETA.
