Powerful photos show how we’re mom shaming each other and it needs to stop

by | August 30, 2018

Abbie Fox, a Las Vegas-based photographer and owner of Foxy Photography, is known for her “Fed is Best” viral photo shoots that beautifully portray mothers feeding their babies in all possible ways. Fox is an advocate for highlighting the struggles that mothers face today in a mom shaming society that seems to demand so much of them, while also judging them along the way.

In this technology world where we spend tons of time on Facebook and in Mommy groups, we find one major thing every day… Mommy Shaming. People roll their eyes and say it doesn’t happen anymore but it is alive and well, and it can be brutal. When I was a first-time mom I would cry for things people said to me, and the main culprit were other moms. Why we can’t just get along is a question I ask all of the time. If our kids are healthy, happy, and thriving, who cares if our parenting styles are different?! Yes, there are things I would never personally be able to do because of my beliefs, but I know there are things I do with my kids my friends are appalled at too. We are all doing our best to keep these little humans alive all while keeping our sanity. We all have our differences in parenting and need to realize that everyone is raised differently and have different values and things that are important to us. We need to spread a little more love around <3 So I got together with some of my amazing clients and we put this together. Each child is holding a sign of what could be deemed a “hot button” topic for some. No, not all subjects are covered. This was a volunteer project and I could not find someone to cover each subject I wanted. Make sure you scroll through the whole album all the way to the end.

“I like to think of myself as a mom activist,” she notes. “I hate the crap we get sometimes. I hate that we get verbally abused for our choices even when we are making the best decision for our family.”

Parents find themselves fighting off critics who are in the same breath, asking where the village disappeared to.

The irony of some of the posts was not lost on followers such as the picture above of medicated births, that attracted a number of ‘sad faces’ because a post highlighting mom shaming wasn’t enough to make people stop and think.

A topic that brings out the worst of the mom shaming in our ‘villages’. As Camilla Gregory replied

Because fed is best…. some people strait can’t breastfeed and some just don’t want to. Not your body or choice and not your baby or choice so why is it any of your concern on what another person does?

The post has resonated with a lot of parents on Facebook, with over fifty-four thousand shares and two thousand comments.
