Spicy and Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries

Deciding on sweet potatoes as your potato of choice is a great swap-out if you want to try to eat a little healthier. It’s true that the more colorful the food is, the better it is for you! This is especially true when it comes to choosing sweet potatoes and purple potatoes as compared the traditional Russet or Yukon Golds. Sweet potatoes possess many health benefits. They are great for overall gut-health, filled with potassium and iron, and it has been speculated that they may have cancer-fighting properties. Spicy and Seasoned Sweet Potato Fries

(Serves 4)


  • 2 medium-large sweet potatoes
  • 1 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp garlic salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • oil of your choice for frying (not needed if using an air fryer)

  1. Thoroughly scrub your potatoes in the sink to ensure that any dirt or bad germs get removed. This step is very important, especially if you’ll be leaving the skin on your potato or eating them as roasted potato skins. I personally prefer sweet potato fries made from peeled potatoes, so I compost the leftover potato skin.
  2. (Optional) Peel your potatoes. When peeling a sweet potato, it is important to use a peeler as compared to a knife, you could easily hurt yourself as the surface of sweet potatoes is usually fairly warped.
  3. Using a sharp chef’s knife, very carefully begin to slice the potatoes to make fry-like shapes. My preferred method is to slice long ways, slice each new piece in half short ways, then make my fry shapes.
  4. In a large dish, place all of the chopped potatoes along with the olive oil and seasonings. Using your hands, mix well in order to coat each fry in seasoning.
  5. Using either an air fryer, deep fryer, or a deep pan on high heat with cooking oil, fry the potatoes in 2, 3, or 4 passes.
  6. Top with a fresh pinch of salt to serve immedietly alongside a sandwich or vegan burger, or alone with your favorite dipping sauce.
