Your food and mood could be having a direct link and skipping the meat off from your diet could be benefiting your body in more ways than you imagined. A study published by the British Medical Journal found that depression symptoms went down considerably within a few months of starting a plant based diet.

Researchers Anastasios Toumpanakis, Isaura Alba-Barba, and Triece Turnbull initially started on to study and analyze the available literature on the effects of a plant based diet on patients with Type 2 diabetes. With 400 participants for 11 studies, the trio extracted data from them to systematically analyze it for depression, self-esteem, nutritional efficacy, quality of life, perceived pain, general efficacy, neuropathy symptoms, dietary adherence, diet acceptability, total cholesterol, weight, triglycerides, fasting blood glucose, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol and diabetes-related medication.

They concluded that those who switched to a plant based diet, followed by educational interventions, experienced a significant improvement in their psychological health, overall well being, quality of life, weight, and diabetic neuropathic pain. Yet, is the claim that a vegan diet can reduce depression going a step too far? The pleasant surprise came in the form of improvement in the levels of low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides and total cholesterol for type 2 diabetes patients.

How does it work?

What exactly led to the improvement in symptoms of depression and diabetes is unknown yet. It can be attributed to a combination of factors resulting due to a vegan diet, from giving the body more nutrients in form of veggies and fruits to overall increase of awareness for a healthy lifestyle. Whatever the reasons, the latest findings sure gives the world more reasons to embrace veganism. You aren’t just preventing animal suffering and contributing to a better cause, you’re literally building a new you! Need more reasons to go vegan?
