9 Months Pregnant Mum Dies Tragically in Hospital Car Park Due to an Extremely Rare Complication

Nick Molloy was rushing his heavily pregnant wife, Rachel, to the hospital as she started getting pain in the abdomen, presuming she was going into labor and it was time for delivery, The Sun reports.

But Rachel collapsed in the car parking of the hospital. Doctors immediately conducted an emergency C-section and the baby girl was saved. After few hours of birthing, despite desperate efforts by the medical team, Rachel passed away, leaving behind a grieving husband and two young children. The 9 months pregnant mum suffered from an extremely rare complication called a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm, which the family initially thought was heart arrest.”I can’t imagine this world without her, because she was my world,” Nick, told Manchester Evening News, The Sun reports. “She was the light of my life and my true soulmate,” he mourned.

According to the media report, Nick stated his wife’s pregnancy had been smooth. Until April 24th, when the 9 months pregnant mum started getting abdominal pains. Baby Isabelle is still being taken care of by the neonatal team, two months post birth. Due to the birthing trauma, she was reportedly put to the cooling chamber to avert any potential brain damage. The baby is no-longer in ventilation.

What is a ruptured splenic artery aneurysm?

A ruptured splenic artery aneurysm (SAA) is an extremely rare condition, occurring mainly in pregnant women. It has high mortality rates, for both the mother (75%) and baby (95%). According to a medical journal, symptoms include ‘sudden and intense abdominal pain,’ which is frequently described as ‘sharp’ and the condition is difficult to diagnose since it is similar to other “obstetric and surgical emergencies.”

The cause of this rare complication is unknown. It is estimated that in the general population the prevalence is only 0.1-0.2% and is seen four-times more in women than men. As per Case Reports in Obstetrics and Gynecology- physiological and hormonal changes have been proposed to cause SAA, The Sun reports.
