Castor Oil During Pregnancy is a Sh**ty Idea

Castor oil during pregnancy? If you wish to go the castor oil route, read this article first…

I’m sure there’s not one us of here who hasn’t been told to drink castor oil in order to induce labor. As I complained of how uncomfortable I was at week forty, all the experienced mothers I knew came out with their own ways to bring labor on. “Go for a bumpy car ride, have sex, eat pineapple, drink castor oil”. Eww, drink what? At that stage, I was pretty sure I’d try anything to get things moving along, but thankfully, my mother, the wise woman that she is, stopped me from going the castor oil route. She said “Julie, labor is hard enough without having diarrhea on top of that”.

Diarrhea Blows

Castor oil is a laxative, which stimulates the bowels, which in turn, irritates the uterus. They say that if you’re full-term and your cervix is ready to go, the stimulation and spasms caused by castor oil can go on to induce contractions. I’d already been scarred of tales of my friends pooping on the delivery table, and I did not want to be spraying my midwife.

Diarrhea can lead to dehydration, which can be dangerous for both you and the baby. If you do have diarrhea during pregnancy, it’s important to drink plenty of fluid, avoid caffeine and a hot environment.

Labor is Already Tough

Labor is exhausting. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. I could not imagine having to deal with hours of intestinal cramps, running to the toilet every five minutes, sweating, nausea, thirst, bloating. Do you really want to do that to yourself before you go into labor and spend however many hours having contractions that feel like your body is being ripped in two, and then another possible hour or more pushing a giant baby out of your vagina?

Do you Want Hemorrhoids?

Ok, you’re probably going to get hemorrhoids anyway, but do you really want to up your chances? While a little castor oil on hemorrhoids can cause it to shrink, yay, good to know, consuming castor oil can exacerbate your hemorrhoids and can cause them, from all of that unnecessary pooping.

Do yourself and your booty a favor, put the castor oil down. Castor oil during pregnancy is a bad idea.
