Greggs Pays Employees £7 Million Bonus And Starts Developing Vegan Chicken
Greggs has announced that it will pay a £7 million bonus to employees following the success of the vegan sausage roll. The bakery chain is now working on developing a vegan chicken alternative to add to its plant-based selection.
The £7 million bonus will be shared between 25,000 employees, with the amount varying depending on how long each person has worked for the company. The majority of staff members will receive an extra £300 with this months pay.
Shareholders of the chain also received a portion of a £35 million payout in 2019 because of successful sales.
Roger Whiteside, Greggs chief executive, said that the chain enjoyed “a strong finish to what has been an exceptional year.”

Greggs Plant-Based Chicken
The success of the vegan sausage roll has inspired Greggs to continue developing its plant-based product range.
Last week the bakery chain added a meat-free steak bake to the menu — much to the irritation of Piers Morgan — and also now offers a vegan doughnut.
“Chicken is a way forward. I have seen some good products out there” Whiteside said of plans to expand the vegan options.

Vegan Diet Convert
Whiteside announced in November last year that he converted to a vegan diet after watching The Game Changers documentary.
“I was encouraged to watch a film on Netflix called The Game Changers. I thought, this is interesting” he said.
“Obviously there are arguments based around animal welfare and the environment, but this was all about the health benefits and I thought I should give it a go.”
