Irish actor Emmett J Scanlan is the voice of PETA’s new pro-vegan campaign. Scanlan has partnered up with PETA to make a video where he asks that everyone treats animals with respect, that we are “all animals.”

The Dublin actor, who has had roles in Hollyoaks, The Fall, Butterfly, Peaky Blinders, and Women on the Verge talks about the emotional conversation he had with his wife (British actress Claire Cooper) that led him to give up meat.

Emmett says he had “kind of justified to himself that he was eating organic meat and that it was humanely slaughtered, whatever the f*** that means.”

Everything changed one night when the actor came home to find his wife crying while watching a video on her laptop. She had been watching a YouTube video by an animal activist and was sobbing that she doesn’t understand why the world is so mean. Emmett watched the video himself and then turned to Claire, saying, “baby, I’m with you.”

This experience changed his beliefs about eating meat. Emmett J Scanlan now believes that by eating meat we’re ingesting bad karma, and by not eating, eat we’re helping the environment.

“It’s healthier for me. I know, I believe, I feel stronger than I’ve ever felt before… More importantly than anything, I feel happy that I’m on this path” says the actor. Scanlan says that even if only one person sees the video and questions why they are eating meat, that’s fantastic.

The actor is following a long line of vegan celebrities who have collaborated with PETA on campaigns to end cruelty to animals. Celebrities such as; Paul McCartney, Alyssa Milano, George Lopez, Mayim Bialik, Charlize Theron, John Stamos, Peter Dinklage, Morrissey, Alan Cumming, Jerome Flynn, and more.
