Scrumptious Crockpot Vegan Apple Butter Recipe

Fall is apple season and there are a million and one recipes using apples. I love to make a batch of apple butter every year. This Crockpot Vegan Apple Butter is made with fresh apples, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice, and has no added sugar. There are so many ways to enjoy this homemade deliciousness. Spread it on toast, stir into oatmeal or eat it by the spoon. My kids absolutely love this stuff – winning!!!

Apple Butter Recipe

Prep Time 20 minutes
Cook Time 6 hours
Total Time 6 hours 20 minutes

Ingredients

5 lbs. apples (mixture of sweet and bitter), cored and sliced
¼ cup water
2 cinnamon sticks optional
1 teaspoon cinnamon
¼ teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg
1 teaspoon fresh lemon juice

Instructions

Add your sliced apples to your crockpot with 1/4 cup water. Turn it on to high heat and let it cook for about 4 hours. Stir the apples regularly to prevent sticking

Turn off the heat and using a potato masher or wooden spoon, mash the apples into a thick, chunky applesauce. Let it cool slightly.
Next, we’re going to blend the applesauce (Let it cool a bit first) until it’s completely smooth. An immersion blender does the job well or you can also use a food processor(might take a couple of bathes) Make sure to leave an air hole while blending to let the steam escape.

Pour the applesauce back into the crockpot, add the cinnamon sticks, and cook uncovered for another 1-2 hours, or until you reach your desired darkness and thickness. When you’ve achieved your desired thickness, stir in the cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice and enjoy your apple butter!
Store in sealed jars or containers in the refrigerator.
