When Will My Pregnancy Start To Show?

There isn’t a set time for when you magically just start showing, it happens at different times for everyone. If you’re newly pregnant and wondering when will my pregnancy start to show, this is the guide for you.

When will my bump start to show?

Everybody is different, so everyone will start to show at a different time. Some women will keep their pre-pregnancy body into the second trimester, while others may start showing in the first trimester.

Some women may notice bloating shortly after getting a positive pregnancy test, but this isn’t the same as showing.

First-time moms usually begin to develop a baby bump at around 12 to 16 weeks, whereas for moms who have had previous pregnancies, will have this pregnancy start to show sooner. This is due to their uterine and abdominal muscles having already been stretched.

If you feel like you start to show earlier than expected it could be down to a number of factors.

  • Bloating,
  • Gas,
  • Constipation,
  • Less often, but twins.

Should I be worried if I’m not showing up yet?

If you’re showing up later than expected it’s not necessarily something to be alarmed about. Catherine Hansen, assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Texas Medical Branch Galveston, says
“The uterus can rest in the body in a variety of positions. Sometimes a woman’s uterus is tilted toward the back (retroverted), which can cause her to show later.”

“Conversely, women whose uterus is tilted forward (anteverted) may show earlier.”

Showing late doesn’t mean that your baby is going to be too small. If there is any reason for concern or you’re wondering when my pregnancy will start to show, your healthcare provider can do an ultrasound to make sure you’ve been given the right due date and your baby is progressing normally.

Babies who are measuring smaller than expected for their gestational age will end up getting more frequent monitoring to make sure they’re doing well.
