While you are just digesting the happy news, you are fed tons of unsolicited advice, worrying suggestions and worst case scenarios by people around you. Being pregnant with twins or more is considered a high risk pregnancy but that doesn’t mean you should stop living in the moment and carry the fear of unknown within you 24*7. Here’s what to expect in such cases.

Vaginal Birth isn’t impossible

One of the biggest myths prevalent about giving birth to twins or more is that vaginal birth is impossible. It isn’t impossible; however, a lot depends upon the position of twins in the uterus. If both the babies are positioned head down, your doctor would certainly agree to try for natural vaginal birth. However, in case either of the twins isn’t facing head down, expect a C-section birth. There seems to be different views on trying for vaginal birth in case first twin (the one at the lower side of uterus) is facing heads down but the other isn’t. While few recommend trying for natural birth in such cases, there are many other practitioners who think scheduled cesarean is the best option. This is because after the first twin is born successfully through natural process, there are high chances a C-section maybe needed for the second one.

Is labor and delivery different for vaginal birth of multiples?

First of all, delivering more than one baby brings with it higher chance of complications. Hence, do not plan on having home birth. Always opt for such delivery in a hospital. There are higher chances of prolapsed cord, placental abruption, postpartum hemorrhage and other such complications while giving birth to multiples. Presence of a skilled expert is essential in such cases.

Your obstetrician should be experienced enough to handle multiple pregnancy cases and the hospital should be adequately equipped with supportive medical staff. Since in quite a number of cases babies are born prematurely, the hospital nursery should be equipped with proper care for such babies.

The hospital staff will put you on an IV and continuously monitor the position of your babies electronically. In case you have <a href="http:// amzn_assoc_placement = "adunit0"; amzn_assoc_search_bar = "true"; amzn_assoc_tracking_id = "veganpregnanc-20"; amzn_assoc_search_bar_position = "bottom"; amzn_assoc_ad_mode = "search"; amzn_assoc_ad_type = "smart"; amzn_assoc_marketplace = "amazon"; amzn_assoc_region = "US"; amzn_assoc_title = "Shop Related Products"; amzn_assoc_default_search_phrase = "low pain resistance"; amzn_assoc_default_category = "All"; amzn_assoc_linkid = "88aa061dc9c18ed40e0df3bfce3eda8d"; “>low pain resistance, let your doctor know so that you can be administered epidural. Epidural also comes in handy in case doctor needs to reach up to your second baby, inside your uterus, to change its position. Expect delivering your babies in a room that doubles up as a operating room, as well as, regular delivery room.

As soon as you deliver the first baby, your doctor will assess the position of the second baby through ultrasound, or vaginal and abdominal examination. If baby is positioned near your cervix, the doctor might rupture the amniotic sac. Your contractions will start again, within few minutes of delivering your first child. Second baby is born just the way first baby was born although this time you’ll be working up a little less to push the baby.

The time difference between both the babies can be anywhere between few minutes to half an hour or more. At any stage, if the doctor finds complications in delivery, you’ll be put up for cesarean delivery promptly.

In case of C-section to deliver more than one baby, the procedure will be same as other normal cesareans.

Recovery after giving birth to multiples

Recovery is pretty much like any other vaginal or C-section birth. In case of vaginal birth, you’ll be discharged within two days while in cesarean delivery, expect to be discharged anywhere between 4 to 7 days, depending upon the complications and your recovery speed.
