Hot Irish Whiskey: The Cure for Literally Everything

Every time I call my Irish mother to complain about an ailment, she tells me to make myself a hot Irish whiskey. A sore throat? Make yourself a hot whiskey. The Flu? Make yourself a hot whiskey. Broken leg? Make yourself and hot whiskey. Obviously, there’s no medical science behind this; I think it’s basically just to warm you up and sweat whatever it is out of you. I’ve been living in the US for twenty years, and every time I’ve ordered a hot whiskey, it’s made WRONG. Here is the correct way to make a hot Irish whiskey.

  • 5 whole cloves
  • 1 slice of lemon
  • 1 tablespoon brown sugar

Scald the glass mug with hot water while you prepare the ingredients (pour hot water into mug to warm it up, then pour out when you’re ready to make). Press cloves into the peel of the lemon slice. Set aside. Measure the sugar into a glass mug. Stir to dissolve the sugar. Pour in the Irish whiskey and add the lemon slice. Let it steep for about one minute before drinking.
