Speaking to the Times Dimbleby, who has just been appointed to lead a review of England’s food system, criticized plant-based diets. Dimbleby also attacked the idea that removing meat, seafood, and poultry from our diets was a practical way to save the planet.

Dimbleby described taking the meat off our plates as “prescriptive and nanny-state-ish”. Dimbleby, who is not a vegan himself, is a co-founder of Leon Restaurant, a restaurant that serves animal products.

According to the Guardian, Dimbleby has been appointed to undertake this groundbreaking ‘farm to fork’ review of the British food system.

While he acknowledges that food security and affordability, as well as, climate change and diet-related disease are all issues that need to be addressed in this review. Dimbleby rejects veganism as a practical answer to these problems.

Dimbleby’s position that vegan diets are unhealthy for children is opposed by the American Dietetic Association that states:

“appropriately planned vegetarian diets, including total vegetarian or vegan diets, are healthful, nutritionally adequate, and may provide health benefits in the prevention and treatment of certain diseases. Well-planned vegetarian diets are appropriate for individuals during all stages of the life cycle, including pregnancy, lactation, infancy, childhood, and adolescence, and for athletes.”

There are many healthy long terms vegans, and people on the plant-based diet from birth and they all are thriving. If you have any concerns about your child’s diet you should always consult with a vegan-friendly dietician or nutritionist.
