Baby’s development in the womb

One of the things mamas-to-be get so excited about is feeling their baby move inside them for the first time. This can happen as early as 15 or 16 weeks pregnant. At this stage, it will feel like butterflies in the stomach or little bubbles. It’s the most amazing feeling in the world when you first realize that you can feel your little miracle moving inside you.

When can my baby feel?

Touch is the first of the senses to develop.

At seven weeks, your baby can feel sensations around the lips.

By 13 weeks, their whole body can respond to touch. They can feel the umbilical cord brush over their skin as they move.

By 15 weeks, your baby can touch its own face with a hand and likes to do so frequently.

From around 16 weeks, your baby will be able to feel changes in temperature.

By seven months they can feel the walls of the womb holding them tightly in a swaddle. Your unborn baby’s development is pretty fast tracked from now on.

When will my baby be able to taste and smell?

Your baby can detect odors that pass through into the womb and dissolve in the amniotic fluid, but they do this using the sense of taste rather than smell.

Between 10 and 20 weeks your baby will become aware of taste. Your baby is swallowing amniotic fluid all the time. If you eat garlic or strong spices, the flavors will permeate the amniotic fluid.

Unborn Baby’s Development- When can my baby hear?

Your baby will start to hear sounds as early as 16 weeks, but her hearing won’t fully develop until around 20 weeks. They will recognize your heartbeat and the sound of your tummy rumbling will be comforting to them. They can also feel the vibrations of your voice when you speak.

Your baby can recognize your voice as soon as they are born. They will recognize their father’s voice too.

Your baby will be able to hear noises outside the womb, so it’s never too early to introduce them to your favorite tunes. Your baby will prefer music they become familiar with, so your favorite songs will be recognized by your newborn and may help to calm them.

When will my baby be able to see?

Your unborn baby is able to see from around 25 weeks. By 32 weeks, your baby can tell the difference between black and white.

Growing awareness

At around 17 weeks, your baby will begin to sense the different parts of its own body, known as muscle sense.
