by | June 17, 2019

A man loses 100 pounds on vegan diet. Is it true? Yes! Keep scrolling to know how.

James McGee, from DeSoto, Texas, reportedly suffered from liver and kidney issues due to his prior drinking habits. He was overweight and had to take as many as 22 medications to cope up with his ailing health, Dallas News reports. Doctors several years ago reportedly predicted McGee wouldn’t make it another year, but a vegan diet changed his life. Now 3 years later, the same McGee is 100 pounds lighter, and he no longer takes the 22 medications. He is also the owner of a plant-based restaurant in DeSoto. Know more about James McGee’s story, here.

McGee, after tackling his own health, now seeks to pass on the benefits of the plant-based life to the DeSoto community by opening a vegan restaurant called Peace Love & Eatz. The exclusive plant-based restaurant serves juices, smoothies, jackfruit tacos, grain bowls, smoothie bowls, and mushroom burgers according to the report. After McGee and his wife, Morgan’s, 4-year-old daughter was diagnosed with food allergies, the couple decided to eliminate everything she couldn’t eat, and find alternatives. The family didn’t want their daughter to do it all by herself.

“We have an alternative for everything. Instead of cashew sauce, I can make a hemp sauce, or nut-free hemp granola,” McGee told Dallas News, adding he is also trying to figure out an avocado alternative since he found people are allergic to this as well. Tropical Dragon, a mixed-fruit delight crafted of papaya, mango, coconut water, mango juice, and dragon fruit (pitaya) is the most popular dish at his restaurant.

Veganism in the Black Community

Speaking about his experience in serving plant-based food in the community, James says he has “got a bridge to do,” adding how veganism is common in the north, and “people understand this stuff,” Dallas News reports. He recalled questions like ‘what’s a vegan?’ ‘How can we cook a full meal without meat?’ for instance. However, he also remarked on how people are “looking at their own health issues and trying to take that first step.”

James explained, in the black community there are a lot of ‘diabetics’ and now “a lot of people are starting to look at it, like, now I’ve got to do something.” McGee stated he wants to convey the message to people about the health benefits of veganism.

It’s wonderful when we hear about someone sharing the benefits of a vegan lifestyle; while at the same time doing good for their own health, animals and the planet. Peace Love Eatz is reportedly located within the Grow DeSoto Marketplace. We congratulate Mr. McGee on his wonderful venture and wish him all the best for his future endeavors.
