Ideally, before you even start trying for a baby you both should be on the same page regarding which diet your child will be fed. Especially, if for one party at least, this could be considered a ‘deal-breaker.’

If you are already pregnant, have just had your child, or are looking to transition your children to a plant-based diet, this discussion can be tense and requires open communication between all parties involved.

Respect Should be the Centerpiece of All Discussions.

For some people going vegan can seem dramatic and restrictive. So it is important to listen to these concerns with respect, and be informed so as to answer any questions your spouse or children may have.

You may be aware of the American Dietetic Association’s view on vegan diets, which it considers appropriate for “all stages of the life cycle.” However, your significant other may be concerned about cutting out animal products, especially as food education has primarily focused on the Food Pyramid, and now ‘My Plate’ which does include animal products.

Some helpful strategies to navigate a diet in a divided household may include the following:

If you are the primary grocery shopper, and cook of the household, then it is much easier to set boundaries inside the home regarding vegan food, however, people can consume whatever they like outside the house.

This is an effective means to finding compromise, and a middle-ground for all the family; so people don’t feel like they are having others’ views ‘forced’ upon them.

This could also include a grill or BBQ being set up in the backyard for animal products to be cooked on.

Going Vegetarian

Sometimes a good compromise for parents in a divided diet household is to bring the children up vegetarian until they can make a choice for themselves.

For spouses who are skeptical of veganism, being vegetarian is usually met with a lot less criticism.

One of the common criticism of choosing veganism for your children is the concern they will miss out at school and birthday parties. With a bit of forward planning on the parent’s behalf, there is no reason your child should feel left out.

For example, parents can easily make (or buy) a vegan cupcake to take to a birthday party to enjoy after ‘happy birthday’ is sung.

It is common for children these days to be on low allergy, nut-free, gluten-free, or sugar-free diets. So there is no reason why your child should feel left out.
