Indian Actress’s Instagram Post Opens Conversation On Post Term Pregnancy

by | May 16, 2019

Indian actress Chhavi Mittal opened a conversation on post term pregnancy when she took to Instagram to share her worries about the time she entered the tenth month of pregnancy. She had been quite worried about the possibility of needing to artificially induce labor due to how late in-term she is. Although she had just given birth on May 13th, this Mother’s Day she opened her heart and publicly shared on social media her anxieties about her situation saying:

I was really looking forward to being a mother of 2 before this day arrives…My patience is wearing thin because there’s still no sign of labor. And if labor doesn’t knock on my door today, we might have to artificially induce it, which breaks my heart because on one hand the baby’s at risk due to being a post-term birth, and on the other hand, the baby’s at risk due to the drugs being pumped into my body for an induction. What does a mother choose?

The good news? Mittal gave birth to a baby boy successfully, even after being post-term.

What is Post Term Pregnancy?

A pregnancy is called post-term when it exceeds the normal window, which is usually between 37 to 42 weeks. Therefore, it lasts longer than 42 weeks and a surprising ratio of 10% of pregnancies end up delivering post-term.

How does this happen and what are the risks?

Post-term pregnancies can be caused by a number of reasons including maternal obesity, placental insufficiency, and abnormalities found in the mother’s central nervous system. Placental insufficiency can not only be a cause of post-term pregnancy but it is also an associated risk that can cause problems with oxygen and nutrient loss for the unborn child.

When a post term pregnancy is happening, the most common way to remedy it would be inducing labor so that the mother and baby will not be at further risk. It’s important to keep your medical professional in the loop if you are experiencing a post-term pregnancy in order to find the best course of action.

The risks

When you are post-term, risks such as vaginal birth trauma are at play (a C-section may be needed in this case). Post-partum hemorrhage and complications in the healing process may also occur.
