Self Care During Pregnancy- What Is and Isn’t Safe?

by | May 3, 2019

While pregnant, it is still important to indulge in self-care to help you stay (somewhat) sane. You may be wondering to yourself what may or may not be safe to use on your hair, face, and nails when pregnant. Of course, a medical specialist is who would know best on this topic, but there are a few things that are pretty much common knowledge when it comes to this topic. Wondering what you should look out for when using a vegan face mask? Questioning if you can color your hair or not while carrying a child? Here is what is and isn’t safe to use for self care during pregnancy.

Hair

Just because you are pregnant doesn’t mean that you have to go 9 and 1/2 months without any hair touch-ups! As far as hair dye goes, using ammonia-free hair dye is always the safest choice. As for bleaching, going for a balayage as no bleach or dye will be coming into direct contact with your scalp which is the thing to look out for here. Brazilian blowouts and other more intensive hair treatments are advised against while pregnant. Natural hair masks are also safe to use for a lazy Sunday at home,

Face

With any face products used when pregnant, anything all-natural and chemical free (and vegan, of course!) is obviously ideal. While pregnant, ditch face care products with active anti-aging ingredients, most specifically retinoids. Laser hair removal and Botox are also advised against. What can you use? Chemical-free face washes, lotions, and face masks that can help increase your pregnancy glow.

Moms-to-be everywhere can rejoice! Getting a manicure and pedicure combo. Although UV lights used for gel and acrylic nails are generally not recommended, you can still indulge in a normal vegan polish. As long as your salon of choice has a good amount of airflow to save you from the nail polish fumes, you are good to go. Try getting together a few girlfriends and do a DIY at-one spa experience to cut down on inhaling in the strong nail polish smell.
