Pinterest is a wonderful world where you can find DIY projects for nearly anything that your heart desires. It is important to note that, however, it is essential for you to do your own research on how trustworthy what you want to make it. NCH’s study took a closer look specifically at sunblock recipes that were posted to Pinterest and it was revealed that they aren’t doing what they are advertising.

Many of the recipes listed [specify] SPF levels up to 50, yet the ingredients in the recipes are not scientifically proven to offer that kind of broad-spectrum coverage… Parents often believe they’re doing the best thing for their child by making their own products at home but if you use a sunscreen that is ineffective, you are taking a risk, and that risk can result in a severe sunburn or skin cancer in the future.

McKenzie also notes that sunblock is regulated for a reason, that there are certain standards required for the safety of the user and that gets lost when you try to DIY sunscreen at home.

Have you been DIY-ing sunblock? Think about making the switch to something from the store that has been proven to work. There are so many vegan and cruelty-free products on the market so you can rest assured to find something safe to use on your family. My personal favorite sunblock is from Sun Bum as they have a wide range of products including a line named “Baby Bum” formulated for your little kid. Pacifica and Babo Botanicals also have great sun-protection products!
