A new text messaging service called “The Cord” was launched in Chicago last week. The service was implemented by the City Bureau with the goal of making pregnancy-related information more accessible to women of color.

As reported by Chicago Tribune, Janaya Greene, a City Bureau fellow said that she, along with few other fellows – Sarah Conway, Camille Powell and Emeline Posner – created the service that allows women to text their queries. This service was reportedly launched after City Bureau fellows like Janaya and her peers discussed maternal health alongside speaking to women on the West Side and learning about their lack of resources.

Greene said, “Somebody I talked to, she was saying that she didn’t really trust the doctors that she went to, and she felt that they couldn’t answer her questions adequately.”

Pondering on the matter, Greene came to the conclusion of a texting service that would allow women exposure to personalized pregnancy-related queries.

“We think it makes the information sharing a little bit more personable,” she said.

Rough Around the Edges

According to a 2018 report from the Health Department, which analyzed the cases of 93 Illinois women’s deaths in 2015, women of color are as much as six times more likely to die of pregnancy-related condition as compared to white women. As noted by researchers and advocates, racism can take a toll on a woman’s body by increasing stress and making her more vulnerable to not taking pain seriously.

Congresswoman Adams notes in a press release that the United States has the worst maternity death among others in the developed world. Specifically, 18 deaths per 100,000 live births and the same goes much higher for of women of color with 40 deaths per 100,000 live births.

Women in Chicago who would like to subscribe to the new service, The Cord, may enter their phone numbers here to receive tips and resources, or directly text and communicate issues. ” As noted by researchers and advocates, racism can take a toll on a woman’s body by increasing stress and making her more vulnerable to not taking pain seriously.”
If only there was a country that black people could go to, where there were no white ‘racists’, constantly causing them stress, and if only there were some form of transport which they could easily afford to get them there – literally within hours!
    Oh, wait…
Why do ‘women of color’ insist on living around white people, in white countries, if we’re so awful to them?
