Dairy milk- why it’s bad for kids

Dairy milk has been glamorized and put on a golden pedestal by society as being essential for kids to grow big and strong. Although many think milk is what helps kids bones so and the heart stays strong, it’s actually the calcium found in it that does. Luckily for you, it can also be found from other sources such as tofu, leafy greens, and nuts.

The ugly truth behind the dairy milk you find at the store is that it contains the growth hormones forced into cows that make them produce milk for mass-consumption at a disgustingly fast rate. Yuck. Even if the milk comes from a local farm or a family friend, I still stand by the motto, “Not your mama, not your milk.”

What replacement options are there?

It’s such a great day and age to be living in where we have numerous plant-based options to replace milk! The best part? Whether store-bought or homemade, they are a much more natural way for your vegan kid to get in their nutrients! Making pancakes? Use soy or almond milk. Making a smoothie? Try coconut or hemp milk. Craving vegan cereal? Try rice or oat milk.

I personally use almond or coconut milk 9 out of 10 times (especially since I’m allergic to soy milk) but once you find the right dairy-free milk with the right brand (or recipe!), you’ll ever want or need to go back to cow’s milk.

How should I cut-out dairy milk?

What works for one family, might not work for another. Heck, what might work for one of your vegan kids might not work for your others. Depending on a lot of factors in you and your future kid’s life, you may make the switch immediately or you may have to transition into it. There’s no shame in either of these methods!

One method is making the switch without letting your kids know and you may be surprised at how well they take it. A different method that may work if they’re older, it having a simple talk on the ethics behind cutting out dairy milk before going through with it. Don’t forget to let them now that vegan hot chocolate is just as good— or even better than “normal” hot cocoa!

My kid is having a hard time… what do I do?

It is possible that your vegan kids might not take well to dairy milk meaning that they’re not fans of the taste or consistency. It was definitely a while before I got used to it when I made the switch!

Experiment with different types of plant-based milk and even different brands (you’d be surprised at the difference between brands) to help make the switch. It’s a process that will take time for everybody to get used to so with a little bit of patience and trial, you’ll get there.
