Plant-Based Foods You and Your Pup Can Share

by | May 17, 2019

I don’t know about you, but every time I even think about eating something, my little fur baby is right at my feet begging to get in on the deliciousness. Let me tell you, chihuahuas won’t take no for an answer! Although there are certain foods that everyone knows dogs can’t indulge in, such as chocolate which is toxic to them, there is a surprising amount of food choices that aren’t only safe for them to eat, but are super healthy for them as well! Here are my top 5 plant-based foods that I like to share with my pup that yours is sure to love as well.

NOTE: Depending on your veterinarian’s advice on your fur baby, having them follow a vegan diet may or may not be possible, but that doesn’t mean that they have to completely miss out on some vegan eats! Of course, like anything, be sure to talk with you or veterinarian beforehand before making any diet changes with your fur baby in order to ensure that they are clear to eat “human food”.

Sweet Potato

Sweet potatoes are not only delicious to us humans, but also to dogs! Sweet potatoes are great to promote a healthy digestive system for your fur baby and they also have vitamin B6, C, and A. Either boil or bake plain sweet potato to serve to your pup!

All-Natural Peanut Butter

It’s no surprise to dog mamas that peanut butter is a must, but it’s important to make sure that the peanut butter only includes 1 ingredient- peanuts! Many kinds of peanut butter on the market contain xylitol, a nasty sugar substitute so you can avoid this by making your own at home using this recipe.

Cantaloupe

Safe to feed your dog in moderation, a beautiful orange cantaloupe is a yummy Summer fruit that you and your pup can enjoy together by the pool. Once chopped into bite-sized pieces, you and your dog are good to go. Cantaloupe has so many good vitamins and it even helps reduce the risk of cancer.

Spinach

Want to supplement your dog’s diet with something containing iron, antioxidants, and a large range of vitamins? After rinsing well and chopping, cook some fresh spinach without any oil or seasonings and add to their favorite meal.

Plain White Rice

Is your precious fur baby having minor tummy issues? Feeding them a small amount of cooked, plain white rice can help provide some relief in the same way that it does for you.
